Un puissant séisme de magnitude 7 a frappé jeudi près des côtes du nord de la Californie, a annoncé l’Institut américain de géophysique (USGS), déclenchant une alerte au tsunami.
Les États-Unis ont les yeux rivés sur la côte Ouest. Les directs TV se multiplient, les bateaux en mer rentrent au port, les habitants rentrent chez eux. Un tremblement de terre a frappé vers 10h44 (heure locale) à 10 kilomètres de profondeur près de la petite ville d’Eureka, selon l’USGS. L’alerte au tsunami a été déclanchée sur une grande partie de la côte pacifique au nord de San Francisco jusqu’à l’Etat de l’Oregon, avant d’être rapidement levée.
« Sur la base des paramètres préliminaires du séisme (…) des tsunamis dangereux sont possibles pour les côtes situées dans les 300 kilomètres de l’épicentre du tremblement de terre », ont annoncé les autorités américaines. Elles ont indiqué qu’aucune zone n’avait encore été touchée par un tsunami, mais que toute personne se trouvant à proximité des côtes devait être consciente du risque encouru.
