Au moins 40 athlètes participant aux JO ont été testés positifs au Covid-19 mais la situation n'est pas surprenante en raison de la hausse des cas dans le monde, a indiqué l'OMS mardi.
"Il n'est pas surprenant de voir des athlètes infectés, car le virus circule à assez vive allure dans d'autres pays", a déclaré la Dre Maria Van Kerkhove, responsable à l'OMS de la préparation aux épidémies et pandémies, lors d'un point de presse à Genève.
"Ces derniers mois, (...) de nombreux pays ont connu des poussées de Covid-19, y compris aux Jeux olympiques, où au moins 40 athlètes ont été testés positifs", a-t-elle indiqué, affirmant que le Comité olympique, en collaboration avec l'OMS, "avait examiné toutes les différentes approches qui doivent être mises en place" lors de rassemblements de masse tels que les JO et pris "les bonnes mesures".
Elle a souligné que le virus est "toujours très présent" dans le monde, circulant "dans tous les pays".
Les données recueillies par l'OMS grâce au système de surveillance sentinelle dans 84 pays montrent que le pourcentage de tests positifs a augmenté au cours des dernières semaines.
Cette augmentation a "entraîné une augmentation du nombre d'hospitalisations et de décès dans plusieurs pays", a indiqué Mme Van Kerkhove.
"Globalement, le taux de tests positifs est supérieur à 10%, mais ce chiffre varie d'une région à l'autre", avec par exemple un taux supérieur à 20% en Europe, a-t-elle détaillé.
Mais elle a souligné que la surveillance des eaux usées suggère que la circulation du virus est "de 2 à 20 fois supérieure à ce qui est actuellement rapporté".
"C'est important car le virus continue d'évoluer, ce qui nous expose tous au risque de voir apparaître des virus plus dangereux qui pourraient échapper à notre surveillance", a-t-elle averti.
Elle a indiqué qu'une circulation aussi élevée du Covid-19 "n'est pas habituelle" en cette saison car les épidémies de virus respiratoires ont tendance à connaître des poussées lorsqu'il fait froid.
L'OMS continue d'appeler les gouvernements à améliorer leur surveillance du virus et les populations à se protéger, y compris par la vaccination. Mais Mme Van Kerkhove a relevé que la situation actuelle reste différente de la période 2020-2022 car le monde dispose désormais de traitements, d'outils de dépistage et des vaccins.
Mais l'OMS a constaté une baisse alarmante de la couverture vaccinale au cours des deux dernières années, a-t-elle déploré, en particulier parmi le personnel de santé et les personnes âgées de plus de 60 ans. "Il est urgent de remédier à cette situation", a insisté Mme Van Kerkhove.
